Horizons at Westminster will launch its inaugural six-week summer session this June, 2018. The program will run from Monday to Friday between June 25th and August 3rd, 2018. With its emphasis on combatting summer slide, Horizons programs across the nation offer “a culturally competent, project-based curriculum” with a primary focus on reading and math. Two other essential components of the Horizons’ approach are swim lessons and field trips. Breakfast and lunch are served.
The initial cohort of rising second-graders from Moylan School in Hartford will come to Westminster each day and work with a lead teacher, an assistant teacher, and a number of Westminster student volunteers. The goal is a classroom of roughly 15 to 18 students.

The Horizons at Westminster program will grow each year by adding both a new group of 15 students from Hartford and a corresponding set of teachers and volunteers. When it runs at full capacity, Horizons at Westminster will serve grades one through eight.
This summer the Horizons at Westminster session will overlap in part with the Summer Academy at Westminster School (SAWS). SAWS represents a partnership between Covenant Preparatory School (CPS) — a private but tuition-free middle school for boys located in Hartford — and Westminster. Covenant Prep runs its summer session at Westminster and its curriculum is supplemented by support from Westminster faculty and students.
This new Horizons program has engaged the dynamic energies of Westminster as made manifest by the wide variety of enthusiastic support that the start-up effort has received. Ultimately, this latest initiative allows the school to extend its core value of community into Hartford.
