Who We Are
Our Mission
Horizons at Westminster provides a free, academic and enrichment summer program that leverages a unique public-private school partnership to close opportunity gaps for underserved students in the Hartford area. Closing the Opportunity Gap Gaps of opportunity continue to grow between low-income students and their peers. More than 30 million children from low-income families face increasing obstacles to educational opportunity and economic mobility. With disparities in access to pre-K programs, technology, cultural enrichment, regular exercise and healthy food, underserved students start off at a disadvantage—and that disadvantage often persists and grows into adulthood.By the end of 4th grade, children from low-income families can be as many as two years below grade level. What’s more, the erosion of reading and math skills over the summer can exacerbate this academic gap, which becomes almost impossible to rectify by the time students reach high school. Horizons at Westminster addresses this profound challenge head-on with a transformational summer learning program that provides early intervention and a consistent, long-term commitment to academic and social development. |
“There are times when I stop to observe a class in session. I wonder what would happen to our students without this program. The odds of them getting to their reading level would be so low. They need Horizons’ attention. This is urgent.”
