In Their Words
Erin Doyle
Horizons 2nd Grade Teacher “I look forward to teaching every summer at Horizons at Westminster! I love being able to connect to students in a different way than I would have during the school year. I am able to see their growth academically but more importantly, I have the opportunity and privilege to see them grow socially and metacognitively. Through the experiences they have in the summer- virtual field trips, theater, art, and dance- I can see them learn new things about themselves as well as develop new interests. It really is #6weeksofhappiness for all of us.” |
Lindsey Goodwin
Horizons 1st Grade Teacher “On my first day I was asked to describe Horizons in one word, and I said enchanting. Every day when our students get off the bus you can see the pure excitement in their eyes. This program provides students the opportunity to grow and share their knowledge and skills beyond the classroom. We provide an opportunity for students to feel safe enough to take risks and inspire them to work outside their comfort zone. As the summer comes to a close, we have spent time reminiscing about our experiences and look forward to the journey that is to come." |
Jayce Hamilton
Horizons Assistant Teacher "As a first year teacher and bus monitor at Horizons, I can say that this has been my favorite teaching experience. Not only is this a great opportunity for the students, but it is also such a great opportunity for the teachers to learn and grow with their students. Horizons truly embodies the idea of a 'found family'. I cannot wait to come back and do it all again!" |
Tia McDonald
Horizons Volunteer “This summer, I had the opportunity to become a volunteer for Horizons at Westminster, and I am thankful beyond words that I was given the chance to. The connections you build with the kids are priceless, and it’s a real and exciting thing to play a part in helping a child grow—not only academically and as a student, but also as a person and with who they want to become. The teachers, volunteers, and program as a whole have done so much for the kids that get off the bus; you can see it in their faces when they light up around the smiling staff and when they’re engaged in fun activities. The excitement, energy, and love the children bring to the table make the experience worthwhile, and I’m always thrilled when I wake up in the morning to start a new day with them!” |
