About Horizons at Westminster

Our Program

Horizons at Westminster provides a free, academic and enrichment summer program that leverages a unique public-private school partnership to close opportunity gaps for students from Hartford.
  • Horizons at Westminster delivers nearly 200 hours of academic instruction and enrichment each summer to 135 students from Hartford.
  • Students are eligible to enroll after completing Kindergarten and any time until their 8th grade year.
  • Each class consists of 15 students, a lead teacher, an assistant teacher, and several student volunteers.

Our Mission

Rooted in long-term partnerships with students, families and schools, Horizons at Westminster advances educational equity and inspires the joy of learning for young people of Hartford.

Our Impact

Horizons at Westminster aims to support students and their families by instilling in them the joy of learning, the skills for success, and the inspiration to realize their dreams. We believe that every child in Hartford, regardless of background, should have the same chance at making a positive impact on their community. We strive to provide a transformational, tuition-free, summer learning program that helps eliminate critical barriers to success and allows our students to:
  • Read proficiently by the end of third grade
  • Achieve eighth grade math competency
  • Build swimming skills and self-confidence
  • Graduate from high school, college and career ready
Public-Private Partnership

At its inception, Horizons at Westminster joined with Moylan School, a public elementary school in Hartford, to create a public-private education partnership to engage students in a summer program designed to encourage growth and proficiency in key academic skills and exploration of new horizons for learning and adventure.  As our program has grown, we have cultivated strong relationships with other public school administrators, educators, and families. We work closely with our partners in Hartford Public Schools to identify and support students and families throughout the year, sharing key assessment data and progress for each child.

The goals of this partnership are to:
  • Prevent or reduce summer learning loss
  • Engage students from Hartford Public Schools
  • Foster a life-long love of learning
  • Ensure children learn how to swim
  • Provide cultural experiences and opportunities for social growth

Horizons at Westminster operates under the 501(c)(3) status of Westminster School, with the school acting as the fiduciary agent. Horizons does not receive any direct financial support from Westminster School, but does receive substantial in-kind operational support, including administrative support, facility and equipment use, and supplies. Horizons at Westminster relies on raising funds independent of the school to cover staffing, programming, transportation, field trips and other costs.

“Horizons at Westminster is more than just a six-week summer program; it has become an essential partnership that supports our ELAMS students in growing socially, emotionally, and academically. Our children speak highly of the engaging experience, and the data confirms its positive impact on student learning. We are truly blessed to work with them and look forward to continuing our partnership for many years to come.”
