Academics

Building a Solid Foundation

Academics continue to be the bedrock of our program. Throughout the summer, students learn and practice essential skills in literacy, math, and STEAM with the aim of preparing for the school year ahead. Our classes are led by experienced and certified teachers and supported by college-aged assistant teachers and high school-aged counselors and CITs. We also employ two learning specialists to provide individual and small group interventions. Our 4:1 student-to-staff ratio ensures that each student receives the individualized support they need to make significant gains over our six weeks together.

Emphasizing Literacy & STEAM

In addition to our daily academics, classes also visit the Simsbury Public Library each week. These visits help build literacy skills and foster a love of reading. The staff librarians read books to our younger students and teach our older students how to use the catalog system to find new books. Before leaving the library, each student has the chance to check out a book to read throughout the week. Additionally, there are many times throughout the week where students read with Westminster students and volunteers in the Westminster Library. The emphasis on building early literacy skills helps ensure that every child is reading proficiently by Grade 3.

In addition to the math and science our students study in their homeroom classes, they also attended specialized STEAM lessons each week. During STEAM, students have the chance to learn about robotics and computer programming, build structures out of LEGOs, make their own slime, and compete in egg drop challenges.
