Building a Solid Foundation
Through a blend of academics, enrichment and confidence-building activities, Horizon’s project-based model is designed to fuel a life-long passion for learning. Our curriculum, created by a District Coach for Hartford Public Schools, aligns with state standards for each grade level and outlines specific skills, guiding questions and resources for each week of the program. Our lead teachers augment this robust curriculum with specific lessons and activities designed to address the individual needs of their students identified in the pre-assessment tests taken at the start of the program. Over the course of the summer, our teachers and learning specialists work diligently with our students to mitigate summer learning loss and prepare for the academic year ahead. We are incredibly proud of our students for their commitment and the growth they exhibit over our summer together. During the six-week session, students gain 8 to 12 weeks of reading and math skills, often returning to school ahead of where they left off in the spring. |
Emphasizing STEAM
In addition to the math and science our students study in their homeroom classes, they also attended specialized STEAM lessons each week. During STEAM, students have the chance to learn about robotics and computer programming, build structures out of LEGOs, make their own slime, and compete in egg drop challenges. Our students also benefit from attending Horizons at Ethel Walker during their yearly STEAM Expo. The Expo provides a great opportunity to connect with our neighbor program and allows our students to engage with even more hands-on science experiments. |
