Launching A Remote Summer Model
Because we could not bring Horizons students to campus during summer 2020, we brought Horizons to their homes in Hartford. We provided students and families with a strong sense of connection and supported their learning and essential needs. Most importantly, during this difficult time, Horizons students enjoyed the community of their classmates and teachers.
Summer Highlights
Our Community Support: Westminster students, faculty, staff, parents and alums all pitched in to help our program take flight. From assembling the weekly “school in a box” and sewing masks for Horizons families to troubleshooting tech issues and gathering fresh vegetables from Gifts of Love community farm, these volunteers were instrumental in delivering our high-quality 2020 program.
Summer 2021: We hope to be able to host an in-person program in summer 2021; however, we have made three different plans: distance learning, a hybrid offering, and a rotating, in-person schedule. As the summer draws nearer and we have a better sense of the Horizons families’ comfort-level with a bus-ride to Westminster and an in-person program versus synchronous distance learning, we will make a final decision. In February, we will open applications for the summer of 2021’s first-grade cohort and we will reenroll our second, third, and fourth-graders.
Summer Highlights
- Six weeks of synchronous classes on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
- Weekly deliveries on Mondays of fresh vegetables and "school in a box"— including curriculum, science experiments, art supplies and independent enrichment activities.
- Volunteer-led virtual read-alouds, science experiments, field trips and exercise classes.
- Daily check-ins and tech support that helped students achieve a 78% average attendance rate.
