This week, we definitely took advantage of the summer weather and enjoyed spending some time outdoors. When students weren’t in the classroom, they stayed active at the pool, in the dance studio, and on the lawn playing kickball. On Wednesday, Grades 1-3 showed incredible perseverance as they hiked up Talcott Mountain and took in the beautiful views at the top. Resilience was certainly the theme of the week, as all students worked hard on developing their skills in the classroom and showed strength in the face of challenges. Today, our fourth and fifth graders are taking a trip to Empower Adventure Park where they will partake in fun team building experiences and learn about leadership while embracing the outdoors. Week 4 was a great week, and we are all looking forward to Week 5!

First GradeAnother week for the books! First graders have shown much resiliency during Week 4. This week we learned about our solar system by visiting the Planetarium and even creating our own versions of planet Earth. We are still super ex- cited about swimming every week as we continue to develop our swimming skills. In math, we have been learning about place value, and identifying the number of tens and ones in a two-digit number as well as drawing pictures to rep-resent. Our field trip hiking up to Heublein Tower was so much fun and showed us just how resilient we could be. We can’t wait to experience the adventures of Week 5! - Ms. Goodley & Mr. de Kanter |
Second GradeThis week we showed our resiliency in many ways! We enjoyed a hike to Heublein Tower where we were able to see some amazing views while enjoying our snacks and cooled down afterwards with some ice cream sundaes. We also have been conquering our fears by jumping into the deep end at the pool. At the planetarium we viewed the constellations and some of the planets in our solar system. Afterwards we were able to create our own interpretations of constellations. In math we have been adding and subtracting multi-digit numbers with regrouping and strengthening our understanding of how to solve word problems. In reading we have started some discussions about what we know about plants, bees, and pollination, while also coming up with some questions we’d like to find answers to over the next few weeks. We even started the process for growing our own plants and we can’t wait to check on our seeds next week to see if they’ve grown! - Mrs. Goodwin & Teacher Jayce |
Third GradeThird Grade had a spectacular Week 4! We continued our discussion on habitats and were able to showcase our knowledge and creativity through posters. Third graders focused mainly on our reading this week, with daily read alouds and silent reading time. This week we also were able to build on our swimming skills and work up to jumping into the pool! We took a trip to Heublein Tower on Wednesday and hiked all the way up to the top! This was a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the forest habitat through hands-on experience as well as develop our sense of resiliency. The hike was definitely difficult but incredibly rewarding as we were able to see beautiful views of the Farmington Valley from our vantage point. Next week we will be taking a trip to the farm to learn more about animals and agriculture. Looking forward, we hope to build on what we already know and learn more each day. We cannot wait for Week Five! -Mrs. Hedstrom & Mr. Lehman |
Fourth GradeThis week in grade four, students demonstrated resilience! During our morning meetings, we engaged in discussions about demonstrating perseverance. Our grade four scholars were able to connect the themes of resilience and perseverance when learning about the oceanographic cartographer, Marie Tharp, and Mae Jemison, the first African American female astronaut in space. In addition, we continued discussions about respecting others and the importance of demonstrating empathy. The grade 4 scholars have become cartographers by mapping out the Horizons campus. We can’t wait to see their final products! In math, students were challenged to solve multi-step word problems in addition to building their fact fluency. Some of the most memorable moments included enjoying Ice Cream, making Tie Dye shirts, and the EMERGE Team Building Adventure at Nomads. Week 5, here we come! -Mrs. Douglas & Ms. Cohen |
Fifth GradeGrade 5 is excited for our field trip to Empower at Nomads this week! In the meantime, we have been busy tie-dying shirts, comparing decimals, and learning about the colonists during the American Revolution. We also enjoyed the sundae bar after lunch on Wednesday – an awesome treat! We have been keeping ourselves active in dance, swimming and recess kickball. We can’t believe Week 4 is over! -Ms. Crawford & Mr. Allen |
